Program Notes

Monochromatic: presenting rays of light associated with only one color. A painting done in different shades of the same color. Each "dance" 1) limits itself to a specific register, and/or 2) uses only 1 or 2 ideas or means of articulation.

High Dance - I usually tell people that my first instrument was violin. But strictly speaking it was the "tonette": a black plastic recorder used to play simple tunes in grade school music classes. As a kid I would take it home, experimenting with various ways of achieving the most piercing and annoying sounds possible. As a result, my Mom hid it in my parents bedroom. But I found it, starting where I'd left off.

Slow Dances 1 and 2 - The second of these in particular is one of my favorite little pieces. They were written quickly, and it took some courage to leave them alone after I'd done so.

Low Dance - In Werner Herzog's film Aguirre, Wrath of God there is some fantastic pan flute playing by Peruvian Indians. This movement is a musical recollection of that haunting and evocative sound.

Bright Dance (driving song…) - Speaks for itself.
